Gesture Portrait - using three colors
I love doing these little portraits and figures. There is something so satisfying about completeing a painting in a short session. Because of the small size it is impossible to get sucked into small details that detract.
I will be teaching a four day workshop on gesture portraits at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center, August 13th -16th. The workshop will focus on short poses and the students will be painting at least four portraits a day. The purpose of the this is to understand the form and paint the portrait in the simpelist way possible. We will also be exploring different palettes. This painting was done using three colors burnt sienna in the shadow. In the light I added titanium white with a touch of sienna for a warmer tone and in the cooler areas white with burnt umber was used. The white and umber combination take on a greenish hue next to the sienna.
