During my painting sessions I like to have a mirror on hand, which I use to critique my progress. If I am at the easel too long my judgment can grow stale and it becomes difficult to evaluate my work.  A mirror changes the perception of the painting and reveals problems, especially with drawing and design.  I think of it as a very honest friend who will let me know where I went wrong.

To critique I turn my back to the painting and hold the mirror up to see it in the reflection.  This shifting viewpoint gives a fresh perspective and flaws become obvious.  If I view the subject and the painting at the same time, it is easier to compare the large value shapes and unnecessary details in my painting become apparent.

The mirror also comes in handy at the end of a painting session when I use it to clean smudges off of my face before I leave the studio.
