Day 19 of 30 paintings in 30 days: I knew I had to work from life after my struggle yesterday. A leggy geranium is budding on my kitchen counter giving a nice spot of color in winter. I brought it into the studio and duct taped it into the vase so it would not slip down. What I didn't count on was it responding to the light and opening and turning as I painted it. Once again limiting myself to the 30 still life pastels and am now pretty sure about the set and any changes that should be made.

Time warp blooming you didn't expect. Not too surprising considering light changes every ten minutes--maybe subjects do too? It may be at times like this that photography is useful? Just ordered a book on the use of photography in painting. Schmid skims gracefully over that topic. I wasn't satisfied. Hope I didn't blow my seven bucks? :-))

Hi Linda, If I approach it as plein air or jittery model then I just interpret what the flower is. So I kept some of the original shape and some of the new until I got the shape I wanted. I see that you got a plein air easel, good for you! Plein air will teach you more about working from photos than any book. In plein air you have to edit and interpret. No comfy copying allowed. That was an aha moment for me and changed the way I feel about working from photographs. Let me know how you like the book.
