A good brushstroke should

Create or change a shape

Describe an edge or transition- softer or harder

Create or change a value- lighter or darker

Create or change a color- warmer, cooler, more or less saturation.

These are questions you should ask when you step back from your painting.  If you work on a painting without any purpose you will deaden the surface and the painting will look muddy.

Muddy thinking creates muddy paintings!
